Brief History Sarkin Baka in the Zazzau Emirate
Right from the beginning, baka is associated with huntering. Hunters that use local guns to hunt in the bush. The title of sarkin baka started under the then District Head of Sabon-Gari Alhaji Muhammad Aminu in 1937. Alhaji Aminu was on a visit to Bomo Village and he was invited by the sarkin Bomo to his house. Before his arrival, sarkin Bomo had already asked a group of hunters to come and entertain the District Head. They came and did what they were asked to do and Alhaji Muhammad was very impressed and excited with their entertainment. Upon conclusion of this, the Sarkin Bomo introduced the then sarkin baka and the first Sarkin Baka, Dayyabu and Alhaji Muhammad requested that the sarkin Bomo should bring him (Dayyabu) to his palace at Sabon-Gari. Sarkin Bomo did exactly as requested but he told Dayyabu to include five (5) people who would accompany him to the palace of the District Head. These five (5) people where; 1-Madakin Baka, 2-Wazirin Baka, 3-Turakin Baka, 4- Majidadin Baka and 5-Ma’ajin Baka.
On their arrival to the palace of the District Head of Sabon-Gari, Alhaji Muhammad made them amongst his entourage, and asked them to always come during the Eid festival both the Eid El-fitr (Karaman Sallah) and Eid El-Kabir (Babban Sallah) for which they will be with him at the hawan Sallah and hawan daushe celebrations respectively which normally takes place at the Emir’s Palace, Zazzau. At that time Sarkin Zazzau Alhaji Jaafaru Ishaq was on the throne of Zazzau Emirate.
Alhaji Muhammad Aminu has being with Sarkin Baka as sarkin Bakan Hakimin Sabon-Gari till 1959 when he was crowned the Emir of Zazzau after the death of Alhaji Jaafaru. On this, the sarkin Bakan Hakimin Sabon-Gari became Sarkin Bakan Zazzau because of the shift of office of his master from District Head to Emir of Zazzau. Alhaji Muhammad and his sarkin Baka have being together for sixteen (16) years at exactly 1975.
The current emir of Zazzau Alhaji (Dr) Shehu Idris was turbaned as the Emir of Zazzau after the death of the then emir of Zazzau Alhaji Muhammad Aminu. And exactly two (2) weeks after his death, the then sarkin Bakan Zazzau Dayyabu also died. And His son Mallam Yakubu Dayyabu was made the Sarkin Bakan Zazzau by His Highness Alhaji Shehu Idris. Mallam Yakubu has being the Sarkin Bakan Zazzau for thirty-five (35) years, time passed and Mallam Yakubu became very old and request from Highness to lift the burden on him for his son Abubakar Yakubu to carry on as the Sarkin Bakan Zazzau and his request was answered. Mallam Abubakar remained the Sarkin Bakan Zazzau from 2010 to date.
The title of Sarkin Bakan Zazzau has a total years of fifty-six (56) years.
